Surrender to the Journey

Women have been having babies naturally since the beginning of time. It is our privilege and honor to birth life. I feel it is our sacred duty to embrace this gift and fully feel the power of this incarnate gift. But in this busy modern world with fear-based media and not-enoughness, some of us have forgotten our innate power. What better time to remember that you are a powerful creator, than in that delivery room, where you really need to bring it?!

Here are a few things I learned along my journey from maiden to mother.

Seek Knowledge Not Education

When I found out we were pregnant, I was scared. Scared of the labor pain, scared of the unknown. I felt like there was so much to do and such little time. The first thing I did was ask Dr. Google. Before long I was completely overwhelmed and confused as to what to do next.

Do you remember that Mark Twain quote: “Don’t let school get in the way of your education.” Well, my advice to you is, don’t let information overload get in the way of your intuition.

Women have not been birthing babies from their heads. Why are we so often gathering more information from outside resources when deep down we know we are whole and complete and we’ve got this?

Birthing naturally is written in our DNA, not in a book.

Now, I’m all for being a life-long learner but it’s easy to feel overwhelmed when you have fear of the unknown and over-think things. The trick is to gather information and listen to what resonates with you—what feels right to you. And by feels right, I mean, literally it feels good in your body. You instinctually know.

Tap Into Your Power

It’s no coincidence that the womb resides in our power center. The Sacral Chakra is the energetic center for all our relationships. It’s where we develop an inward sense of self and an outward awareness of others. Dwelling in the same place, the Hara, in martial arts is known as the power center—connecting the upper body to the lower body. It’s no mystery why the belly button nestles in this center—the umbilical cord connects to this power.

There is so much intrinsic knowledge in our body. And now with another one in there, you’ve never had a better opportunity to really embrace the power that creates worlds.

Put it Into Practice

It’s one thing to conceptualize and understand what I’m talking about. It’s another thing to put it into practice and fully embody your inner power and trust your intuition. I came to know this with my practice of syncing breath to movement.

Cultivate that trust in your intuition, you're going to need it as a mother.

My yoga practice allowed me to trust in my innate strength and flexibility as well as surrender to the journey. When I stopped the chattering mind and held space for that internal journey of shedding the layers and remembering, I opened up. And that’s kind of what birth is, in all it’s majesty. It’s a rebirth of yourself. You’re transforming from a maiden to a mother.

I hope you find what that practice is for you. Hopefully, it involves being quiet in nature, taking pen to paper, listening to beautiful music, expressing through dance or all of the above. May you tap into that creativity, that happiness, that stillness.

Much love & mamaste,

Kristen
